Do you feel more hungry in winters?

As a nutritionist dealing with clients all over the world, I face a common issue among them.

These common statements of the clients during winters are a concern to everyone.

‘‘I feel more hungry.’’

‘‘I think I am eating more than needed.’’

‘‘I can’t just stay away from the sweets.’’

Now we know that mother nature gives its best food in winters, from fresh green to root vegetables, from maize to sorghum, from tea to chikki, and many other healthy varieties.

So is it just the time to eat and indulge!

But it is also a time to stay healthy as summers are going to come next and it will that time when you want to boast your winter weight loss.

So let us analyse why this happens!

There are four basic principles of nutrition, viz food intake <meals/diet>, exercise, stress and sleep.

In winters the sun rises a little late, also the day time is less, which results in higher production of sleep hormone melatonin, and hence your body is more sleepy. Although when you are sleeping well, your craving decreases, but here the body(brain) becomes confused because one won’t rest as it is still a working hour of the day and your body has more of melatonin. Thus, it makes your body feels that its sleep deprived and this leads to imbalance of satiety hormone (leptin) and elevation of the hunger hormone (ghrelin). This leads to more intake of food or at least you are craving more.

Also, since the days are shorter and we are mostly inside our exposure to sunlight is minimum, it effects the serotonin hormone (the hormone responsible for our mood). This leads to mood swings and also leads to our binging on carbohydrate rich food.

Finally, our body also has to do efforts to keep us warm in the winters, for this the body needs energy and this energy comes from food. The instant energy that we get from eating high carbohydrate food, results in eating way too much than actually needed.

So, lets analyse what can be done. Here are some pointers, follow these five rules to stay healthy and fit during the winters.

  • Three servings of vegetables, out of which one should be green.
  • Two servings of fruits.
  • 300 ml of dairy.
  • Don’t stay at a place for more than 45 minutes, which means give your self-movement so that the blood circulation within the body is good.
  • Sit in the sun for at least 30 minutes a day.

Enjoy the winters, as it is meant to be.
