Since evolution people have come home to feel relaxed and food has played a major role in that comfort. Eating a hot bowl of fresh food has always been comforting, relaxing and helping in getting rid of stress.
But ever since some of people in the health industry made carbs the villain in the weight loss journey, there has been a major debate whether one should eat them or not during the weight loss journey.
For sure that when you go on a carb free weight loss journey and stop eating carbs initially, you do have some fast weight loss but after a certain loss of 2-3 kgs there is a stagnation zone in your weight loss journey. Despite your best efforts you tend to gain some weight in the abdominal area and when this happens it is a big cause of concern and one must evaluate why this happens.
Although this is a fact that the expenditure of energy in the latter half of the day is not as much as in the morning, we should keep our dinner light definitely but have carbs in the dinner for sure.
Carbohydrates provide the working energy to all your muscles. Your muscles or your muscle tone requires energy because your muscle is required for you to burn fat. Fat loss is not about calorie restriction alone or just good sleep or high protein or exercise. Everyone’s been doing that for years and years and still struggling to lose weight. It is about the production of HGH, which is your human growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland and this HGH is what helps you build muscle which in turn helps you cut fat and burn fat and increase your metabolic rate so that your body is continuously burning fat throughout the day.
Your muscles get this energy from carbohydrates. Most people today prefer to have earlier dinners which is a good habit as long as you have carbohydrates in that dinner. When people go out for late-night parties, they either don’t eat at all thinking that they shouldn’t be eating at night. But if you don’t eat at night and you’re awake your body still requires energy because you’re awake at that point and if it doesn’t get the energy it requires, it goes into famine mode and your cortisol goes up and the fat storage switch goes on.
While you are sleeping your body is working hard to detoxify the organs and to repair and replenish them to work for you tomorrow and keep you fit and active. If you do not eat carbs in the dinner, you are for sure not getting this energy for your body to work efficiently for you or help you recover. Also, in this state of lack of energy, the inflammation in the body will increase leading to formation of more acid in the body, thus resulting in weight loss being a very difficult process.
If your body does not get energy from carbohydrates, it starts breaking down your muscles. It starts breaking down your muscles first for energy and then for fat. If you have less muscle, you have more body fat and if you have more muscle, you have a chance of slashing down and burning fat more effectively.
Leptin is your satiety hormone and ghrelin is your hunger hormone. When you have carbohydrates at night your leptin is regulated which means that your ghrelin which is your hunger hormones are on the lower side and most people tend to get cravings for food and snacks and sugary items at night and it is more of those who have cut down on their carbohydrates in the evening or through the day. So, leptin is decreased and ghrelin which is the hunger hormone increases.
There are good carbs and bad carbs. Your bad carbs are all of processed junk, white flour, white sugar. Your good carbs are your good grains like millets, brown rice or white rice or red rice. If you don’t have a problem with gluten, it could be wheat rotis, buckwheat, millets. All of these are great complex carbs. Vegetables are good complex carbs as well your good grains and all of these helps with weight loss.
Therefor understand your carbs and just don’t start avoiding it completely without proper nutritional guidance. A good bowl of khichdi or Dal Chawal with salad or roti sabji n salad is quite effective, when taken in the right proportions and enjoy your weight loss journey.
